Officers responded to a report of a raccoon “behaving strangely” near the 5200 block of 43rd Avenue around 4:40 p.m., Hyattsville Police said.

The raccoon was between a school, which had just dismissed for the day, and a daycare, which was still open.

Police trapped the raccoon and took it with help from an Animal Control officer to a nearby veterinarian, where it tested positive for rabies.

No direct contacts with other people or animals were reported.

“While this is certainly not a normal occurrence, this absolutely falls under the mantra of ‘See something, Say something,’” said Hyattsville Police. “Thank you to all who call to help us work together to ensure a safe community.”
